Building Resilience for Women in Fisheries and Aquaculture Project

Project date: June 2025 – October 2026
Location: Dowa and Dedza, Malawi
Number of Participants (or farmers): 50 women
Project Summary:
The primary objective of the BREWOPFA project is to help women to thrive in the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. We will do this by promoting gender-inclusive practices, improving their skills and working conditions, increasing employment opportunities, and raising their incomes.
The project is designed to address the gender disparities and socio-economic challenges faced by women in Malawi’s fisheries and aquaculture sectors. Women play a crucial role in this sector but face barriers such as restrictive gender roles, unequal access to resources (e.g. land, capital), and poor working conditions, which hinder their meaningful participation, economic independence, and growth. Through technical training and skills development, this project will empower women involved or interested in fish farming to be successful in fingerlings production and business development.
The project will employ the following activities:
- Establishment of demonstration sites for fish fingerlings production
- Technical trainings on fingerling production
- Coaching and follow up loop sessions
- Training on gender makes business sense
- Training on the making of fishing materials
- Mentorship, coaching and follow-up
