Hephzibah Hermes, Smart Aqua project officer, and Danielle Hoogland, communications advisor, had an opportunity to participate in a recent Mtunthumala youth group meeting in Mpingu. The group of young farmers meet regularly to strengthen the group’s capacity to share knowledge, work together, and support one another in their farming activities. Hephzibah also had an opportunity to present a donated smartphone to the Chair, Malaulo Eliya, and Vice Chair, Likisana Banda, to facilitate communications and access to information.

The group is anxiously awaiting the next phase of the Smart Aqua project which includes building a greenhouse at Kawjo’s farm in Mbwatalika. The project, which is funded by the Government of Canada through World University Service Canada – Malawi, aims to empower young farmers through training on integrated aquaculture and agriculture techniques, climate-smart technologies, waste management, Village Savings Loans (VSL) management, and agri-business management which includes Gender Makes Business Sense (GMBS). Investing in young farmers is a priority for the Kawjo Foundation. Their energy, enthusiasm, and eagerness to improve their lives, inspire great hope for the future of Malawi’s agricultural sector.
