Women-led

From the north to the south of Malawi, four amazing women — staff members of our Kawjo Foundation — are spreading knowledge and hope through fish farming! They travel across districts, training vulnerable women and youth to raise fish, earn a living, and stand on their own feet. Through their work, they’re turning ponds into power and dreams into reality. These women are true champions of empowerment and sustainable development!

At Kawjo Foundation, we don’t just talk about women’s empowerment, we live it. As a women-led organization, Kawjo is driven by a strong and inspiring team of women leaders who are making real impact in communities.

At the helm is our Executive Director, Zione Makawa, who leads with passion and purpose—mentoring, supporting, and connecting with other women professionals.

We are also proud to be working alongside brilliant young women scientists like Bertha Michiru and Chisomo Kumwenda, whose work in applied aquaculture is empowering rural women and youth with practical skills. These two women have trained dozens of women in sustainable fish farming, helping to improve food security, household income, and community resilience.

Behind the scenes, Prossy Kawala, our Resource Mobilization Advisor, plays a vital role in ensuring our work is well-supported and sustainable. She supports the organization in writing winning funding proposals and securing resources that sustain our work and expand our reach.

Through our past and ongoing projects Kawjo Foundation has reached hundreds of women; supporting livelihoods, promoting climate-smart practices.
